Slow and guided aikido practice for beginners and regular students
Saito Sensei focused on basics. He wanted everyone to learn and feel accomplished in their practice, especially as beginners. In that spirit, we aim to also preserve and maintain a strong focus on Aikido basics. One of the ways we do that is through our Basics classes, a good place for new and advanced students to work on basic skills that serve as the foundation on which to build further study. As we get deeper in practice, we learn that basics are in fact at the heart of it all.
In Basics classes, we cover fundamental concepts and principles as they translate to basic movement. Footwork is practiced with a focus on how the body moves in response to our partner (sometimes referred to as tai-sabaki, which translates as 'body management').
Building from basic foot and body movement, core techniques are broken down into their basic components and are performed one step at a time and with minimum use of power. This pace of practice ensures adequate safety for beginning students, and allows advanced students to strengthen their grasp of the fundamentals and further deepen their practice.
The Basics class also provides a more relaxed and safe space to learn how to fall (ukemi) correctly. Instructors may use various exercises and partner-assisted practices to give the body a chance to feel what it needs to do to without the stress of feeling forced during a technique.
