About Our Dojo
The Aikido Institute has been providing classes in Aikido for adults and children since 1970. The school is a member of the Takemusu Aikido Association. Ranking is approved through Aikikai Foundation (Aikido World Headquarters) located in Tokyo, Japan.
Iwama Style
We practice "Iwama Style" Aikido. The founder of Aikido, O'Sensei, spent his later years in Iwama, a rural town about 2 hours north of Tokyo by train. It was there that O'Sensei perfected the art of Aikido and built the Aiki Shrine that still stands near the Iwama Dojo. In Iwama, Morihiro Saito was O'Sensei's personal student for 23 years. Saito Shihan, 9th dan, lived and taught in Iwama until his passing in 2002. A number of instructors at the Aikido Institute have trained extensively with Saito Shihan both in Japan and at the numerous seminars Saito Shihan conducted throughout the world.
Dojo Handbook
Created by our own former uchi-deshi Dave Lewin, the dojo handbook is a great resource for new students. It provides an overview of the history of the dojo as well as details about training and practice.
