Covid-19 has put martial arts practices in a tough position. As with most schools around the world, the need to avoid close contact has pushed us to online classes, and like many, we are using Zoom. In doing this, we are applying an ethos that is part of the Aikido journey, namely that we center ourselves and adapt in response to a problem, 'blending' with it's movement or form, such that it's power dissipates and we are no longer in conflict.
While it's true that the medium of online video-tele-communication has not been easy to adjust to for many, there is nevertheless a very clear challenge being presented to the Aikido community right now that goes beyond just learning the technology: what can we practice, on our own but with others, that --even though it's not giving us immediate partner feedback -- is nevertheless helping us practice Aikido techniques through the focused coordination of our mind and body, and is therefore worth our time and effort?
