Learn more about Aikido up-close...
CLASS INFO The Aikido Institute periodically offers the INTRO TO AIKIDO series for people who want to learn more about Aikido up-close. The Intro course is an orientation to the practice of Aikido, with the following aspects: Overview of History and Concepts Aikido is unique in its philosophy and its place in the martial arts world. Instructors will discuss the history of Aikido and our dojo, shedding light on what makes it so unique and powerful. Concepts and principles are explained within the context of the overall discussion of how Aikido helps to achieve harmony. Demonstrations Often times, explanations of concepts and principles require demonstration. Instructors will offer basic demonstrations of techniques or movements. Basics Movement & Technique Concepts and principles are translated into exercises of basic movement. Footwork is emphasized, with a focus on how the body moves in response to our partner. Building from basic foot and body movement, students will then be introduced to basic Aikido techniques. Techniques are broken down into components and are performed one step at a time and with minimum use of power, to ensure safety. Instructors will also introduce students to the mechanics of falling correctly, which includes some basic backward rolling practices. Various exercises and partner-assisted practices will be used to give students a chance to experience falling without the stress of feeling forced to fall during a technique. Safety The Intro course is meant to be a light activity focused on introducing people to the beautiful art of Aikido. It is not strenuous or physically demanding. For us, safety is first, and at no point are any students made to do anything that they are not comfortable with. Students are encouraged to be vocal about their limitations and concerns, and the dojo will make accommodations in any way possible. |
