Another training framework found in Aikido and Japanese martial arts: Shu Ha Ri, the three stages of mastery in arts and apprenticeship traditions. Here we summarize an essay about the application of the Shu Ha Ri framework to the art of Aikido titled "Shu Ha Ri: 3 Stages of Mastery in Aikido", by Miles Kessler, which focuses on a student's orientation to kata, or forms.
It is interesting to compare these three orientations to kata/form with the timing framework in 3 timings of ‘sen’ and the framework regarding different kinds of contact in 4 levels of practice recently covered in The Kiai.
