BLENDING AND MOVING In early 2016, we got notice that we would have to leave our space on Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, which we called home for over 30 years. It was hard to believe at first, and hard to say good bye..
We spent most of 2016 at temporary spaces in Temescal not too far from where the old dojo was. Training was different and sometimes challenging, but what better way to practice one of Aikido's main principles --blending with what comes; breathing. accepting. moving..
After months of searching we were fortunate to find a great new space for our dojo, at 5515 Doyle Street (Unit 2) in Emeryville. It has been a work in progress, but we are finally up and running with brand new mats and a great new space for keiko! !
NEW LOCATION: 5515 Doyle Street, Unit 2 Emeryville, CA 94608
We would like to send our deepest thanks and gratitude to everyone in our extended Aikido family, in the Bay Area and beyond, for contributing in whatever form you have to help us on our way. Losing the physical space of the dojo on Telegraph Ave. was tough but it reminded us that the physical space itself is not as important as the community of love and support that we build and maintain and nurture in our training. We hope to express our gratitude in person and train with you again soon!
WE HAVE NEW MATS! Putting down brand new tatami mats for the new dojo was quite an endeavor!
We learned a lot about different types of mat materials and set-ups. After securing the new materials with help and support from our community, we set out to put the mats down as snug and secure as possible. Check out this time lapse video of the mats being laid down, made by dojo member Jim Beno:
